What Can I Expect From My Session?

At your first session, one of our physiotherapists will begin by performing an assessment to establish a diagnosis of your knee pain. This will include a detailed health history, taking any information about past injuries or issues concerning your knee or your body. In addition, they willalso perform some range of motion and movement tests to further inform them on your knee pain.

During your one-on-one session, our physiotherapist will use a combination of manual therapy and stretching and strengthening exercises to alleviate your acute symptoms and support proper movement in your knee. Our physiotherapists are trained in many techniques, such as IMS, low-level laser, acupuncture. Depending on your injury and pain, they may recommend additional techniques for you.

Your physiotherapist will also review any fitness activity you are doing to make suggestions to tailor your routine to support proper movement. You will also receive a complete treatment plan, which includes any additional treatments that you need, exercise prescription, homecare strengthening and stretching exercises, and any additional tips to help alleviate symptoms of pain.

In some instances, our physiotherapists may recommend other types of treatment – such as chiropractic care, massage therapy and acupuncture. Because Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub is part of a larger multidisciplinary clinic called Electra Health, getting access to these treatments is easy!

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of injuries can cause knee pain?

Because the structure of the knee is so complex, there are many different causes for knee pain. However, some are more common than others: twisting injuries are often the root cause of knee pain. This usually results in tears to your ACL, meniscus, or other ligaments.

But knee pain isn’t always related to a specific incident – arthritis, surgery, infections, or tendonitis from overuse can cause pain in or around your knee.

How long should knee pain last?

This depends largely on your injury. With proper rest, care and physiotherapy, your pain can become less severe after about 3 weeks. In certain instances (tears, surgery, fractures) healing can take anywhere from 12-16 weeks.

What will a physiotherapist do for knee pain?

Our physiotherapists’ main objects are pain relief and prevention. We provide manual therapy, low-level (or cold) laser, taping, and stretching. We also provide exercise prescription and stretching and strengthening moves to ensure that the causes of your pain don’t re-occur.

Because we are part of a larger multidisciplinary clinic, we can also recommend other types of treatment that can benefit you. These include acupuncture, osteopathy, and massage.

What are some good stretches for knee pain?

Depending on the severity of your knee pain, our physiotherapists often recommend the following for a good knee stretch to add to your routine:

  1. Knee Straighteners
  2. Straight Leg Raise
  3. Lying Hamstring Raise
  4. Calf Stretch
  5. Standing Quad Stretch

At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, we know just how painful and debilitating knee pain can be. That is why our physiotherapists not only aim to treat your pain, but to keep it from returning! With a vast amount of experience in knee injuries and pain, you are in the best hands at our clinic.
