Plantar Fasciitis - Downtown Vancouver

Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition that affects approximately 83% of the adult population at least once in their life. At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, our physiotherapists have extensive training in this area and provide you with the most effective techniques and treatments, so that you can get back to feeling your best in no time!

At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, our approach to treatment is unique: we aim to not only treat your condition but to prevent it from recurring by determining its root cause. Plantar fasciitis can be caused by a variety of different factors, including, but not limited to, age, biomechanics of the foot, certain types of activities (like running), and lifestyle. Because of the individual nature of this condition, our physiotherapists look for your root cause and design a treatment plan around it, combining manual therapy with stretching, strengthening, and more. In addition, we have found that plantar fasciitis responds extremely well to laser therapies, such as cold laser and ultrasound. As such, our physiotherapists may also use these treatments.

For plantar fasciitis pain relief, we recommend the following:

In particularly difficult cases of plantar fasciitis, our physiotherapists can also recommend orthotics as another form of treatment for your condition. Orthotics are one of the most effective ways to ensure that your plantar fasciitis stays away for good. Because Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub is located inside Electra Health, getting fitted for orthotics has never been easier!

Plantar Fasciitis Treatment - Downtown Vancouver - physiotherapy for foot

What Can I Expect From My Session?

At your first appointment, you will meet with your physiotherapist for an assessment. He will go through your health history with you, and take note of any past or present injuries and concerns. From here, he will also put you through a series of special tests to help determine the root cause of your plantar fasciitis.

Based on this assessment, your physiotherapist will begin to treat your condition, to relieve any pain that you are experiencing. Depending on the cause of your plantar fasciitis, your physiotherapist can implement IMSultrasound therapy, low-level laser, taping, passive stretching, and exercise prescription alongside manual therapy.

Because plantar fasciitis can be caused by any number of things, your physiotherapist may advise you to avoid certain exercises and rest your foot as much as possible during the acute phase of your injury. And, because plantar fasciitis is often caused by an overload on the soft tissue, your physiotherapist will also educate you – walking you through specific stretches and exercises to teach you about functional movement and proper biomechanics to strengthen this area.

Your physiotherapist will also create a treatment protocol for you, involving follow-up appointments and at-home stretching and strengthening exercises. In certain instances, your physiotherapist may recommend other types of therapy to help treat your condition – such as massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, and orthotics. Because we are part of Electra Health, accessing these referrals is extremely convenient for you!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does it hurt if you have plantar fasciitis?

At the onset of plantar fasciitis, most people feel pain in their heel and their arch. It is often described as a deep ache or a bruise. Depending on what degree your plantar fasciitis is at, you may experience pain all day or it may come in bursts.

What aggravates plantar fasciitis?

High impact and rigorous activity – like running – will aggravate plantar fasciitis. Tight calf muscles can also aggravate plantar fasciitis. Brand new shoes, shoes with little support and old shoes can also aggravate your condition.

Can a physiotherapist help with plantar fasciitis?

Yes! In fact, physiotherapy is one of the most effective ways to treat plantar fasciitis. In the acute phase, your physiotherapist will focus on bringing down your symptoms of pain and easing inflammation in the area. As you progress through your treatment plan, he will begin to gradually add exercises that are targeted to the area to help strengthen it.

How long does it take to cure plantar fasciitis with physio?

This depends largely on the person and the state of their condition, but generally speaking, it takes anywhere from 6-8 weeks to reduce your pain. Our physiotherapists recommend that you come in as soon as possible at the onset of pain to ensure the quickest recovery time.

Our physiotherapists are experts in treating plantar fasciitis. Our approach to treatment is personalized: our objective is to determine the root cause of your condition, provide treatment to alleviate your pain, and educate you to prevent it from recurring. At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, you are in the best hands.
