Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub provides the best physical therapy services to the downtown Vancouver community. Our physiotherapists specialize in diagnosing, assessing, and treating tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and the painful symptoms that accompany it.

What sets our physiotherapy treatments apart from the rest is our approach: our physiotherapists have advanced post-graduate training in effective treatments for tennis elbow. The most effective approach to treating this type of injury is using low-level laser and ultrasound therapies in combination with manual therapy and other techniques. Because of this, we can treat your condition and prevent it from recurring by determining and treating its root cause.

For tennis elbow treatments, we recommend the following:

Tennis Elbow Treatment - Downtown Vancouver - Manual Therapy

What Can I Expect From My Session?

At your first appointment, you will meet with one of our physiotherapists. He or she will perform a detailed health history, including any past or current injuries. From here, your physiotherapist will run you through a series of tests to diagnose your tennis elbow, and more importantly, to determine what is causing it in the first place.

From here, your physiotherapist will perform treatment, focusing on your arm, wrist, and elbow and targeted at alleviating your painful symptoms. We find that ultrasound and low-level laser therapy are immensely effective at treating your injury. Using gentle and non-invasive laser therapies, we are able to target your injury, increase circulation to the area, and decrease your recovery time.

In addition, your physiotherapist will also use manual therapy alongside other treatments, such as IMS, acupuncture, stretching, taping, and more, to give you the most optimal chance at recovery.

Because tennis elbow is often caused by overuse, your physiotherapist will also advise that you rest your arm until the pain has subsided. He or she will also walk you through a series of exercises and movements to support proper movement patterning for when you’re ready to start moving it again – ensuring that this painful condition stays away.

Your physiotherapist will also provide a treatment protocol, including follow-up sessions, homecare exercises and any necessary referrals for braces. For cases that are especially difficult, your physiotherapist may also include other modalities – such as massage therapy, acupuncture, kinesiology and more – into your treatment protocol to ensure the best outcome for your injury.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to recover from tennis elbow?

Everyone is different, and as such, there is no single recovery period for tennis elbow. However, about 90% of people make a full recovery within 4-6 months with physiotherapy treatment, depending on the severity of their pain.

Where is the pain located with tennis elbow?

Generally speaking, pain occurs in the tendons of your elbow, near the bone that sticks out of your arm. Sometimes, it can radiate down into the wrists and hands.

Weakness may also be felt from tennis elbow, making it difficult to grasp and twist with your hand and arm.

What happens if tennis elbow goes untreated?

With the onset of pain in tennis elbow, people often think that it will go away on its own. Our physiotherapists recommend that if you experience pain similar to tennis elbow, that you see your physiotherapist as soon as possible. Untreated tennis elbow may develop into a serious condition that requires surgery.

What is the main cause of tennis elbow?

The primary cause for tennis elbow is the overuse and overextension of your forearm, over a repeated period of time. This causes tiny strains near the bony bump on the outside of your elbow and causes the pain you feel with tennis elbow.

At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, our physiotherapists work with you on movement training and movement patterning to ensure that your tennis elbow pain goes – and stays – away!

Does a brace help tennis elbow?

Yes! In fact, many people with tennis elbow report that a brace has actually decreased their recovery time, and the pain that is felt during their recovery. If necessary, our physiotherapists can provide you with a referral for a brace.

At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, we understand just how painful and debilitating the symptoms of tennis elbow can be on you. That is why our physiotherapists – experts in treating lateral epicondylitis – approach your treatments uniquely: we aim to not only treat your symptoms but also to ensure that they don’t ever come back. Using a combination of manual therapy, IMS, acupuncture, laser therapies, movement patterns, and more, we aim to get you back – and stay – feeling your best!
